Biomes, Protists, Animal Behavior Flashcards
(17 cards)
What are biomes?
Grouping of ecosystems with similar biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) conditions.
What are the 7 major biomes?
Tundra
Taiga (boreal forest)
Grasslands
Temperate rain forest
Desert
Savanna
Tropical forest
Which biome has the most rain
Tropical forest
Where are tropical forests located and what’s the temp like?
Close to the equator (Central America)
Year-round warm temp
Which 3 places of the world are savannas located?
Africa, south America, Australia
T/F: Savanna’s have grasslands
True, but they have clusters of trees as well
Which biome is the driest
Desert
What are the two characteristics of temperate rain forests (region+temp)?
-regions with heavy rainfall
-moderate year-round temperatures
What are the grasslands also known as?
The prairies
Why don’t grasslands have bigger plants
They don’t have enough rainfall to support bigger plants and trees like a forest
In which country are boreal forests (taiga) found?
Canada
Fill in the blanks: Boreal forests develop in long, ____ winters, and ____summers.
Cold, cool
Where is the tundra biome located
Near poles and on top of high mountains with lower latitudes
What biome is cold and damp?
Tundra
What is ethology?
Study of animal behaviour with emphasis on the behavioural patterns that occur in a natural environment
What is evolutionary fitness
Measures how many viable, fertile offspring an individual leaves in the next and subsequent generations relative to others in the population. (Organism survives more = reproduce more = genes passed on more often)
What is adaptive behaviour?
Behaviour that the organism adapted to. It increases an individual’s evolutionary fitness relative to other individuals in the population
