Biomolecules Flashcards
(14 cards)
Chemical composition of carbohydrates
Composed of long chains of identical small sugars, called glucose.
Chemical composition of proteins
Composed of long chains of small molecules called amino acids. There are 20 different kinds of amino acids.
Chemical composition of lipids (fats)
Composed of molecules such as glycerol and amino acids.
Different nutrients needed for a balanced diet
Proteins: growth and repair
Lipids: energy storage
Carbohydrates

What are enzymes
Biological catalystis that increase the rate of chemical reactions.
Anabolic reaction
Small molecules (substrate) to big molecules (product)
Catabolic reaction
Big molecules (substrate) to small molecules (product)
Lock-and-key enzymes
The shape of the substrate is the same as the active site
Induced fit enzymes
The active site changes its shape to fit the substrate
Effect of temperature on enzymes
If the temperature is too high or too low to the enzymes normal temperature, the enzyme can be denatured
