Biooooo Flashcards
(16 cards)
Monosaccharides
Polysaccharides ideal for energy storage: compact
They can for very compact molecules which takes up less space
Polysaccharides ideal for energy storage: physically & chemically inactive
They are physically & chemically inactive so they do not interfere with other cell functions of the cell
Polysaccharides ideal for energy storage: insoluble
They are not very soluble in water so they have almost no effect on water potential within cell & cause no osmotic movements
Blood clotting process
The damaged blood vessels releases thromboplastin which acts as an enzyme. Calcium ions from plasma along with thromboplastin trigger the conversion of soluble prothrombin protein into the enzyme thrombin. Thrombin catalyses the conversion of soluble protein fibrinogen to the insoluble protein fibrin. Fibrin fibers mesh and tangle together trapping platelets and red blood cells. A blood clot is formed
Erythrocytes
HDL
helps to collect bad cholesterol & break them down in liver
LDL
may deposit on the artery wall
BMI formula
BMI = weight (kg) / height^2 (m)
Waist it to hip ratio: risk
A ratio over 0.85 for woman
A ratio over 0.9 for man
Commonly used medications:
- Antihypertensives
- cholesterol lowering drugs
- Anticoagulants & platelets inhibitory drugs
Antihypertensive drugs
Diuretics
Beta blockers
Sympathetic nerve inhibitors
ACE inhibitors
