BioPsych Flashcards
(38 cards)
What is Biopsychology?
Focuses on the interplay between physiological process and psychological function
What is Biopsychology?
Focuses on the interplay between physiological process and psychological function
Parts of nervous system?
Central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, autonomic nervous system, autonomic nervous system
What is nervous system?
Complex network that coordinates and regulates bodily functions and responses to external stimuli
What’s CNS?
Consist of spinal cord and brain, the control center for processing information and coordinating responses
The primary organ of nervous system responsible for higher function such us, merry, emotion, thought, and sensory processing
Brain
A long bundle of nerves extending from the brain down the back, it transmit signal between the brain and the rest of the body
Spinal cord
What is peripheral nervous system?
Connect the CNS and the rest of the body
Control voluntarily movement and transmit info. To the CNS
Somatic nervous system
Regulates involuntarily bodily movement functions such as heart rate, digestion, respiratory rate
Autonomic nervous system
What is neurons?
A basic unit of n.v, responsible for reception, conduction and transmission of electrochemical signals
Contain cell genetic material that Responsible for regulating cellular activities.
Cell body or soma
Receive cignals from other neurons
Dendrites
What is axons
Transmit electrical impulse away from the body cell towards other neuron
What is axon terminals?
The gap between neurons, release neutrotransmitter into the synapes
Two branches of autonomic nervous system
Sympathetic, para-sympathetic nervous system
Prepaes the body to flight or fight, responses during stressful situation
Sympathetic
Promotes rest and digest, helping to calm the body, and conserve energy
Para sympathetic
What synapse
A crucial junction bettwen the 2 neuron or between the nueron and another cell
Importance of synapse?
Information processing: allow complex processing and integration of info. Within the numeral network
Plasticity: can be strengthen or weaken overtime base on the activity
Modulation: the strength and efficacy of synaptic transmission
Are the chemical messengers the transmit signals across the synapse from 1 neuron to another
Neutrotransmitters
Dopamine - norepinephrine- serotonin
Sleep, mood, learning
Heart, Intestine, allertness
Sleep, mood
What is drugs?
Substance that can alter the structure and function of the body and brain
Drugs that treat psychiatric symptoms by restoring neutrotransmitter balance
Psychotropic medication
