Biopsychology-Nervous system Flashcards
(22 cards)
What are the two parts the CNS can be divided into?
The CNS and the peripheral nervous system
What’s the function of the Peripheral Nervous System?
Sends information to the CNS and transmits messages from the CNS to muscles and glands in the body
What is the function of the central nervous system?
The CNS consists of the brain and the spinal cord, the and it passes messages to and from the brain and connects nerves to the PNS
what are the two divisions of the peripheral nervous system?
the somantic and autonomic systems
whats the somatic systems role?
to transmit and receive messages from the senses such as visual information from the eye
-directs muscles to react and move
what does the autonomic system do?
helps transmit and receive information and is further divided into two sections
what are the two sections that the autonomic system is split into?
the sympathetic system-increases activity
the parasympathetic system-conserves the bodies natural activity levels by maintaining it
what is the function of the sensory neuron?
tell the rest of the brain about the external and internal environment by processing information taken from one of the 5 senses
what the function of the relay neuron?
carry messages from one part of the CNS to the other
whats the function of the motor neuron?
carry signals from the CNS that helps organs
what is a synaptic transmission?
the process by which nerve impulses are carried across the synapse, the nerve impulse is an electrical signal thats carried by the chemicals called neurotransmitters
whats is a excitatory potential?
these make it more likely for the neutron to fire and so if a synapse is more likely to cause the post synaptic neutron to fire
whats an inhibitory potential?
makes it less likely for the post synaptic neutron to fire
what does the endocrine system do?
sends information as chemical signals involimg glands and hormones
what are the 4 glands in the endocrine system?
- pituitary
- adrenal
- testes
- ovaries
what does the CNS consist of?
the brain and the spinal chord and is the origin of all complex demands
what did research find about the oxytocin hormone?
it is thought to be particularly important for the reproductive behaviours as it is released following an orgasm which aids conception
what is the fight or flight response?
a reflex response designed to help an individual manage psychically under threat and is also activated in times of stress as the body perceives stress to be threat
what are the three steps of the fight or flight response?
- the hypothalamus recognises that there is a threat
- sends message to the adrenal gland
- triggers release of adrenaline to the endocrine system and noradrenaline to the brain
what is the hypothalamus?
-part of the brain that is located in the centre of the brain and deals with basic survival factors
what is the adrenal gland?
gland that releases adrenaline
what are the physical changes of the fight or flight response?
increases heart rate faster breathing muscle tension pupil dilation production of sweat
