biopsychology: structure and function of neurones Flashcards
(12 cards)
where does the sensory neurone take messages?
from senses (ears, eyes, skin) to brain
where does the relay neurone take messages?
within brain/spinal cord
where does the motor neurone take messages?
away from brain to rest of body
what do sensory neurones consist of and their functions?
- receptor cell: sense external stimulation
- myelin sheath: fatty laye protects axon
- cell body: includes nucleus containing dna
- axon: carries impulses away from cell body
what do relay neurones consist of and their functions?
- dendrite: carry impulses from neurone to cell body
- cell body: includes nucleus containing dan
- axon: carries impulses away from cell body
what do motor neurones consist of and their functions?
- dendrite: carry impulses from neurone to cell body
- nucleus: contains dna
- cell body: includes dna
- myelin sheath: fatty layer protects axon
- node of ranvier: gaps which speed up transmission of an impulse
- terminal button: communicate with next neurone
sensory neurones: axon and dendrite length
short axon
long dendrite
relay neurones: axon and dendrite length
short axon
short dendrite
motor neurones: axon and dendrite length
long axon
short dendrite
sensory neurones: direction of movement
from senses to brain
relay neurones: direction of movement
to and from brain
motor neurones: direction of movement
from brain to muscles
