components of a mental status examination
- appearance: facial expression, grooming, dress, gait, etc.
- orientation: awareness of time and place, events, etc.
- speech patterns: slurred, pressured, slow, flat tone, calm, etc.
- affect/mood: as evidenced in both behavior and client’s statements (sad, jittery, manic, placid, etc.)
- impulsive/potential for harm: impulses control with special attention to potential suicidality and/or harm to others
- judgment/insight - ability to predict the consequences of behavior, to make “sensible” decisions, to recognize a contribution to a problem
- thought processes/reality testing: thinking style and ability to know reality, including difference between stimuli that are coming from inside oneself and those that are coming from outside oneself (including statements about hallucinations, delusions, and conclusions about whether ct is psychotic)
- intellectual functioning/memory: level of intelligence and of recent and remote memory functioning
psychosocial stress
when there is a perceived threat (real or imagined) to things like social status, social esteem, respect, and/or acceptance within a group, self-worth, etc. especially when they feel uncontrollable
- typically an ongoing event
- may manifest in many different ways, both physical and psychological
contraindicated
not recommended or safe to use
- a medication or treatment that is contraindicated would not be prescribed because it could have serious consequences
endogenous depression
depression caused by a biochemical imbalance rather than a psychosocial stressor or external factors
exogenous depression
depression caused by external events or psychosocial stressors
