Biosphere Flashcards
(26 cards)
The part of the earth that supports all organisms, made up of all of the Earth’s ecosystems.
Biosphere
The scientific study of interactions between different organisms and between organisms and their environment.
Ecology
A group of organisms so similar to one another that they can breed and produce fertile offspring.
Species
Groups of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area.
Population
Assemblages of different populations that live together in a defined area.
A first with tress, and mushrooms
Communities
Populations of plants that interact with each other in a given area with abiotic components of that area.
Ecosystem
Group of ecosystems that have the same climate and similar dominant communities.
Biome
An individual living thing that is made of cells, uses energy, reproduces, grows, and develops. Example: studying one lion
Organisms
What are the three basic method for ecological research?
Observation, experimentation, and modeling
What is biotic?
Living
Abiotic?
Nonliving
Where does the energy source begin with?
The sun
organisms that can make glucose during photosynthesis/they can produce their own food
use most of the energy they make for themselves
Producers
What do producers(or autotrophs) do in photosynthesis?
use light energy from the sun to produce carbohydrates(sugars and starches)
Adds oxygen to atmosphere and removes carbon dioxide
Examples
Organisms use chemical energy to produce carbohydrates
Chemosynthesis
The energy that is not used by producers can be passed on to organisms that cannot make their own energy.
Organisms that can only acquire their energy from other organisms
They rely on other organisms for their energy and food supply
Consumers-Heterotrophs
Obtain energy by eating only plants
Herbivores such as cows, deers, and caterpillars
Energy by eating other animals.
Carnivores such as snakes and owls
Eat both plants and animals to obtain energy.
Omnivores such as humans and bears
Feed on dead plant and animal remains and dead Matter such as mites, earthworms, and snails
Detritivores
Breaks down organic matter
Decompose bacteria and fungi
When the feeding relationships among the various organisms in an ecosystem form a network of complex interactions ecologists describes these relationships as
Food web
Series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten.
Food chain
A diagram that shows the relative amounts of energy or Matter contained within each object
Ecological Pyramid
