Biosphere To Ecosystems Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the biosphere?
The biosphere is that part of the earth where living organisms occur.
What are the components of the biosphere?
The biosphere consists of the atmosphere, lithosphere, and hydrosphere.
What is the atmosphere?
The atmosphere is the layer of air that surrounds the earth and consists of a mixture of various gases.
What gases are essential for photosynthesis and respiration?
The atmosphere contains carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen (O2).
What is the lithosphere?
The lithosphere is the soil and rocks comprising the outer layer of the earth.
What does the hydrosphere include?
The hydrosphere includes all the water on the surface of the earth, i.e., oceans, rivers, lakes, and even water vapor.
What percentage of the earth’s surface is covered by water?
Water covers approximately 75% of the surface of the earth.
What is a biome?
A biome is any area with a particular climate, together with all the living organisms occurring in the area.
How is a biome named?
A biome derives its name from the dominant type of vegetation occurring in the area.
What are the two major types of biomes?
The two major types of biome are terrestrial (land) and aquatic (water) biomes.
