Biotic Factors Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is a Biotic factor?
A living organisms that shape the environment
Examples of Biotic Factors (at least 5)
Fungi, bacteria, Archaea, Animals, Plants, Protists, viruses, dead organism/waste, competitors for food, Availability of breeding partners
Affects of Biotic factors on the ecosystem?
- The arrival of new predators will disrupt numbers of prey and other organisms
- When new species are introduced, they can outcompete a native species for food
- New species also bring in new pathogens that cause disease and harm the existing species
What is Competition in Biotic relationships?
When organisms try to obtain the same resources which may only exists in limited amounts
IntErspecific Competition?
Between different species (Leopard, Lion)
IntrAspecific competition
Within the same species (2 bears fighting for fish)
What is predation?
- Predation is a feeding relationship when one organism (predator) consumes another (prey)
- Involves the transfer of energy from one living thing to another
- The lower an organism is on the food chain in an ecosystem, the greater the population must be
What is an Abiotic Factor?
Non living factors physical factors, did not come from living organisms
Examples of Abiotic factors? (At least 5)\
Air, Soil, temperature, light, water, minerals, humidity
What is Symbiosis?
Symbiosis is the interaction between 2 different organisms living together, at least 1 organism willing to benefit form the symbiotic relationship
