What is the study of birds called?
Ornithology
Are birds endothermic or ectothermic?
Endothermic.
When and why do birds migrate?
In the fall, to find food.
What kind of eggs do birds lay, and what are the shells made of?
Amniotic eggs, shell made of calcium carbonate (CaCO3)
What is a clutch?
Used to describe the amount of eggs in the nest.
What do down feathers do?
Insulate the bird and keep it warm. Used in coats, pillows, and comforters.
What are contour feathers used for?
Flying and providing the color of the bird.
What is the Pennsylvania state bird?
The ruffed grouse.
Is bird metabolism high or low?
High, which means that they need a lot of calories.
Birds provide us with food. What are some examples of birds we eat?

-Goose
Male birds have bright feathers and often a crest. Why?
To attract a mate and draw attention away from a nest.
What allows birds to fly? (three things)
-Hollow bones
-Wings
-Air sacs
Explain how birds preen.
Birds place oil from a gland in their tail onto their feathers using their beak.
Explain a bird’s digestive system.
Very efficient and fast. Food moves from mouth to crop, then stomach, then gizzard, and finally into an intestine. Food can be digested in less than an hour.
