Sterilization
A procedure that renders an individual incapable of further reproduction
Vasectomy
Principal method of sterilization of males
Portion of each ductus deferents is removed
Tubal ligation
Both uterine tubes are tied close and then cut
Non-incisional sterilization
Essure - procedure, a soft micro insert coil made of polyester fibers and metals (nickel, titanium, and stainless steel) is inserted with a catheter into the vagina through the uterus and into each uterine tube
Combined pill
Contains both progestin and estrogen and is typically take once a day for three weeks to prevent pregnancy and regulate menstrual cycle
Extended cycle birth control pill
Contains both estrogen and progestin
Take once a day in three month cycles of 12 weeks of hormone containing pills followed by one week inactive pills
Minipill
Contains low dose of progestin only and is taken every day of the month
Contraceptive skin patch
Contains both estrogen and progestin delivered in a skin patch placed on upper outer arm back lower abdomen or butt once a week for three weeks
Vaginal contraceptive ring
Flexible donut shaped ring contains estrogen and progesterone and is inserted by female herself into the vagina it is left in for three weeks to prevent contraception and then removed for one week to permit menstruation
Emergency contraception
Also known as morning after pill
Consist of estrogen and progestin or progestin alone to prevent pregnancy following unprotected sexual intercourse
Hormone injections
Injectable progestin such as depo-pro era given intramuscularly by health care practitioner once every three months
Interuterine devices (IUD)
Small object made of plastic copper or stainless steel that is inserted by a healthcare provider into cavity of uterus. Prevents fertilization by blocking sperm from entering the uterine tubes
Spermicides
Foams creams jellies suppositories and douches contains sperm killing agents
Make the vagina and cervix unfavorable for Sperm survival and are available without prescription. Placed in vagina before intercourse
Male condom
Nonporus latex covering placed over the penis that prevents deposition if sperm on the female reproductive tract
Vaginal pouch
Also called female condom
Designed to prevent sperm from entering the uterus
Made of two flexible rings connected by a polyurethane sheath one ring lies inside the sheath and is inserted to fit over the cervix the other ring remains outside the vagina and covers the female external genitals
Diaphragm
Rubber dome-shaped structure that fits over the cervix and is used in conjunction with a spermicide can be inserted up to six hours prior to intercourse
Cervical cap
Resembles a diaphragm but is smaller and more rigid
Fits snugly over cervix and must be fitted by a health care provider spermicides should be used with this
Rhythm method
Abstaining from sexual activity on the days that ovulation is likely to occur in each reproductive cycle. 3days before ovulation the day of ovulation and 3 days after ovulation
Sympto-thermal method (STM)
Natural fertility awareness based method of family planning that is used to either avoid or achieve pregnancy
Utilizes normally fluctuating physiological markets to determine ovulation such as increased basal body tempo and the production of abundant clear stretch cervical mucus
Abortion
Premature expulsion of the products of conception from the uterus usually before the twenty week of pregnancy
May be spontaneous( miscarriage) or induced (intentionally performed)
Mifepristone (RU 486)
Hormone approved only for pregnancy 9 weeks or less when taken with misoprostol
Mifepristone is an antiprogestin; it blocks the action of progesterone by binding to and blocking progesterone receptors
Vacuum aspiration
Suction can be performed up to 16th week of pregnancy
Small flexible tube attached to a vacuum source is inserted into the uterus through the vagin
The embryo or fetus, placenta and lining of uterus are removed by suction
Dilation and evacuation
Between 13-16 weeks
Cervix is dilated then suction and forceps are used to removed fetus placenta and uterine lining
Late stage abortion
16-24 weeks
Surgical methods similar to dilation and evacuation or through non surgical methods using saline solution or medicines to into abortion
Labor may be induced by using vaginal suppositories intravenous infusion or injection into the amniotic fluid through the uterus
