What does Hosea 11:1 say?
The escape to Egypt - ‘I called my son out of Egypt’.
What happens in Matthew 2:1-18 to fulfill the prophet of Hosea?
Joseph has a prophetic dream warning him to leave Bethlehem and go to Egypt. The family stay until Herods death in 4BCE.
What does the escape to Egypt mirror in the OT?
The escape of Mary, Joseph and Jesus mirrors ancient history where Joseph is taken to Egypt in Genesis.
What does Hosea represent and recall in his writings?
Hosea writes about Jewish nation and Israel COPERATE PERSONALITY representing all Jews. He’s recalling the way God rescued Israel from Egypt sending Moses.
How does Matthew interpret Hosea?
For Matthew the ‘son’ is the ‘son of God’, Jesus himself. This is clearly not the meaning Hosea intended, but could be DOUBLE PROPHECY.
What does Jeremiah 31:15 say?
Massacre of the innocent ‘Rachel weeping for her children’.
What happens in Matthew 2:1-18 to fulfill the prophet of Jeremiah?
To protect his rule, Herod ordered to go to Bethlehem and kill all boys under 2.
Outside of Matthew’s gospel there is no historical evidence for the massacre how is this explained?
A murder spree is quite in keeping with Herods character. Bethlehem had 1000 people so a massacre could have been 20 children being killed.
What does R.T France say about the Massacre?
France explains why the massacre isn’t mentioned by historians.’ The murder of a few infants is not on a scale to match the more specular assassination recorded by Josephus’
What does Raymond Brown say about the massacre?
Brown says the story echoes the story of Moses when Pharaoh goes on a killing spree.
What does Josephus Flavius say about Herods reign?
He describes Herods reign but never mentions this atrocity, although he describes how Herod kills his sons, wife and mother in law.
