blood Flashcards
What does our blood contain?
red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, plasma
What is the role of red blood cells?
carry oxygen from the lungs to our body’s tissues
What do red blood cells contain?
hameoglobin
What happens when the red blood cells have traveled to our tissues?
They split back into oxygen and haemoglobin- oxygen can diffuse
What are the two adaptations of the red blood cells?
do not have a nucleus - more space for the hameoglobin and oxygen and they have a large surface area to absorb oxygen
What do white blood cells do?
defend us against infection
How do white blood cells stop the pathogens?
They could consume a microorganism, make antibodies which can bind onto pathogens to be destroyed and produce antitoxins which neutralise the toxins that pathogens produce
What do white blood cells have that red blood cells do not?
a nucleus
What are platelets?
small fragments of cells
What are platelets roles?
float in blood wait till we get a cut and act as a glue patching up the hole - clotting - stop microorganisms getting in - infection
What is plasma?
pale liquid helps blood flow, carries everything
What is artificial blood?
sub blood- consists of salt water - adds volume - doesn’t contain red blood cells
