Blood Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is blood made of
55% plasma
45% red blood cells
Function of plasma
To transport nutrients, waste products and hormones via blood vessels
Function of red blood cells
Transport oxygen from the lungs to the body’s cells, where is used in respiration
Adaptation of blood cells
Bioconcave snape enabling a large surface area to absorb and release oxygen,
absence of nucleus also enables more room to carry oxygen.
Consists haemoglobin - every haemoglobin carries 4 oxygen molecules which it binds to
Function of platelets
Help clot blood, preventing blood cells from escaping
Adaptation of platelets
Smaller than red and white blood cells,
no nucleus,
they have cell fragments that help form scabs,
Mesh Protein called fibrin holds the platelets together in a clot
Function of white blood cells
Protect the body from desease by englulfing invading microbes that can cause infection called phagocytoncis
Adaptation of white blood cells
Can squeeze through walls of capillaries
What are platelets
Platelets are small cell fragments that play a crucial role in blood clotting. They help form clots to prevent excessive bleeding when blood vessels are injured.
