Q

A

4.5-5.0 L

1
Q

What is the function of blood?

A

Transports nutrients and oxygen to the cells and returns waste products

2
Q

Plasma

A

Liquid part of blood in which cells and platelets are suspended

3
Q

What is plasma made of?

A

Consists of water, electrolytes, and proteins.

4
Q

Hemoglobin

A

A protein that gives blood it’s red color and allows it to bind with oxygen.

5
Q

Anemia

A

When the number of red blood cells is too low. The blood carries less oxygen resulting in fatigue and weakness

6
Q

Polycythemia

A

When the number of red blood cells is too high. The blood is too thick which, increases the risk of a stroke or heart attack.

7
Q

Red blood cells

A

Erythrocytes. Make up about 40% of blood volume.

8
Q

Blood platelets

A

Thrombocytes. Assists in blood clotting.

9
Q

Thrombocytopenia

A

A low number of platelets. Increases the risk for bruising and abnormal bleeding.

10
Q

Thrombocythemia

A

A high number of platelets. Increases the risk of thrombosis, which may result in stroke or heart attack.

11
Q

White blood cells

A

Leukocytes. Protect against infection.

12
Q

Leukopenia

A

A low number of white blood cells. Increases the risk for infection

13
Q

Leukocytosis

A

A high number of white blood cells. Can indicate infection or leukemia.

14
Q

What are the five types of white blood cells?

A

neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils.

15
Q

Neutrophils

A

Protect the body against infections by ingesting bacteria and debris.

16
Q

Monocytes

A

Ingest dead or damaged cells and help defend against infectious organisms

17
Q

Basophils

A

Participate in allergic responses

18
Q

Eosinophils

A

Kill parasites destroy cancer cells and involved in allergic responses.
