BLOOD CANCER Flashcards
(20 cards)
- It is a cancer that starts in the tissue that forms blood.
LEUKEMIA
Most blood cells develop from cells in the ___________ called __________
BONE MARROW, STEM CELLS
What are the 4 main types of leukemia?
- Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL)
- Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML)
- Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL)
- Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML)
- Develop very quickly (within a few days or weeks)
- Aggressive tx is required.
Acute Leukemia
- Can go unnoticed for years and is usually found in a routine blood test.
Chronic Leukemia
What are the conditions that can develop in Leukemia patients?
- Anemia
- Thrombocytopenia
- Enlarged Liver or Spleen
- Leukopenia
Rare Symptoms that can develop in Leukemia patients:
- Chloroma
- Leukemia Cutis
What symptoms can manifest in Leukemia?
- Vomiting
- Confusion
- Loss of muscle control
- Seizures
- Swollen Lymph Nodes
- Fever or Chills
- Night Sweating
- Joint and Bone Pain
- Is a deficiency of RBC and Hemoglobin.
- S/SX
a. SOB
b. Paleness
c. Palpitations (Rapid Heartbeat/Tachycardia)
d. Weakness, Tiredness
e. Dizziness
f. Headaches
ANEMIA
- Is a low blood platelet count.
- S/SX
a. Easy bleeding
b. Widespread bruising, purple patches under the skin
c. Frequent nosebleeds
d. Bleeding gums
e. Red spots on the skin
THROMBOCYTOPENIA
- Leukemia cells build-up in the liver or spleen
- S/SX
a. Can be felt by swelling or discomfort in the abdomen.
b. Loss of appetite
c. Losing weight without trying.
d. The lower ribs usually cover this organ, but when they are enlarged, the doctor can feel them.
SPLEENOMEGALY/ENLARGED LIVER
- A low white blood cell count.
- S/SX
a. Weak immunity system: Therefore, a patient will have more frequent or severe infections.
LEUKOPENIA
A tumor-like collection of leukemia cells under the skin or in other parts of the body can occur.
Chloroma (Granulocytic Sarcoma)
These are skin lesions that occur in 25% of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia patients.
Leukemia Cutis
- Affects the lymphoid cells.
- The symptoms include swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, and groin.
LYMPHOCYTIC LEUKEMIA
- Affect myeloid cells, which are immature white blood cells.
MYELOGENOUS LEUKEMIA
- affects most of the young children.
- still does affect adults, but usually have a worse prognosis than children suffering from the same condition.
ACUTE LYMPHOCYTIC LEUKEMIA (ALL)
- Most common in adults.
- Rapidly-developing condition.
- Can quickly spread to different. parts of the body like the spleen, liver, and brain.
ACUTE MYELOGENOUS LEUKEMIA (AML)
- can happen gradually, will not have symptoms for years
- hard to manage than acute one
CHRONIC LYMPHOCYTIC LEUKEMIA
- affects mostly adults.
- slow-moving subtype.
- can alter its progression and suddenly become an acute, rapidly progressing condition
CHRONIC MYELOGENOUS LEUKEMIA
