What finger should you use when you are palpating for a vein to draw blood from?
Index or middle

Thumb, the brachial artery runs through the thumb so you can feel your own pulse with your thumb.
How should you clean vein site?
Start from the center and start swirling out away from center.
How should you not clean vein site? Why?
Vigorous circles, it just rubs germs around without actually cleaning it.
What should you never do after cleaning site with alcohol pad?
Never blow on site, some textbooks say don’t even wave your hand over it to dry.
Once you alcohol the site, is it okay to repalpate?
No, you have to know where you are going with the needle.
What part of the needle is called the bebble? Which way should it be facing? Why?
The shaved part, face up. If needle is sideways or upsidedown you won’t get blood half of the time.
What angle do you insert needle?
15-30°
When drawing blood what way should the label on the vile be facing? Why?
Down, so that you can see if blood is coming in
You should never fish in a patients arm with a needle. Why?
This causes lots of damage and is like using a scaple inside their arm. You could lacerate an artery.
After you draw blood on a patient, you should let them know to not lift anything with that arm for how long? Why?
1 hour, it could cause blood to leak around the vein and cause bruising.
