Blood / Heart Flashcards
1
Q
Plasma transports
A
Transports:
- Dissolved nutrients (glucose, amino acids)
- dissolved waste (urea, carbon dioxide)
- hormones
- proteins
- heat energy
2
Q
Red blood cells transport
A
Transport oxygen that’s bound to haemoglobins
3
Q
Platelets role
A
- released chemicals when blood is exposed to air
- soluble fibrinogen —> insoluble firbrin
- fibrin traps platelets and RBCs = clot / scab
4
Q
White blood cells role
A
- digest pathogens
- make and release antibodies to destroy pathogens
5
Q
How are RBCs specialised
A
- contain haemoglobin -> binds to oxygen
- no nucleus -> more haemoglobin in each cell
- biconcave -> increase SA : V and decreases distance to centre of cell -> increase rate of diffusion
6
Q
Artery structure and function
A
- Thick outer wall —> blood is high pressure
- thick elastic layer —> artery can stretch and recoil —> keeps high pressure
- thick muscular tissue —> dilates ans constricts —> controls blood flow
- narrow lumen
7
Q
Vein structure and function
A
- thin outer wall —> low pressure blood
- thin muscular and elastic layer —> wall can contract to keep blood flow
- semilunar valves —> prevents back flow of blood
8
Q
Capillary structure
A
- very narrow lumen
- one cell thick —> short diffusion distance
—> substances go from blood to tissue
9
Q
Pulmonary circulation
A
deoxygenated blood —> lungs
Oxygenated blood —> returns to heart
10
Q
Systemic circulation
A
Deoxygenated blood —> returns to heart
Oxygenated —> all around body
11
Q
Blood vessel:
Heart to body
A
Aorta
12
Q
Blood vessel:
To liver
A
Hepatic artery
