A

it will feel tight but shouldn’t last too long

3
Q

what is the first thing(s) you should to with the sphygmomanometer before the procedure

A

disconnect the tubing and squeeze the air out of it

make sure the dial is zeroed

4
Q

how should the patient be positioned

A

seated and relaxed

upper arm fully exposed

arm level with the heart on like a desk or something

5
Q

where should the BP cuff be applied to the arm

A

as high up as possible

snuggly, one finger

6
Q

what is the order of procedure for taking a patients BP

A
intro/ consent
prepare sphygmomanometer
position patient
apply BP cuff
locate brachial artery
estimate BP
auscultate fine tune BP
7
Q

what happens after the BP cuff has been wrapped around the patients arm

A

the tubes are reattached and the blub valve fully closed

8
Q

what do you do once the equipment is all set up

A

find the brachial pulse which is medial of the biceps tendon

9
Q

once you have found the brachial pulse what do you do

A

inflate the cuff until you can no longer feel a pulse and take that as the estimated systolic - delate the cuff rapidly

10
Q

what you do once you have your estimate

A

place your stethoscope over the brachial pulse and inflate

11
Q

on auscultation how high should you inflate over the estimated by

A

30 mm Hg

12
Q

once the cuff is inflated while auscultation what happens

A

the cuff is slowly deflated until tapping beats are heard (systolic pressure)

continue until the beats disappear (or in some patients become muffled) and that is diastolic volume

rapidly deflate cuff

13
Q

when slowly deflating the cuff what speed should this be at

A

2 mm Hg
