BLOOD PRODUCTS Flashcards
(25 cards)
What are the fluids given called?
crystalloids, colloids, blood products
What is cryoprecipitate and PPF for?
replaces fibrinogen, von Willebrand, hemophilia A (w/ bleeding)
What is FFP for?
increase clotting factor levels
What are PRBCs for?
increase O2 carrying capacity
What is whole blood for?
> 25% blood loss
What are platelets for?
when platelet count <50,000/microliter and bleeding
What is cryoprecipitate?
contains a concentrated subset of FFP
fibrinogen, factor VIII, von Willebrand factor, factor XIII
What is cryoprecipitate indicated for?
low fibrinogen, von Willebrand disease
SE of cryoprecipitate
hemolytic transfusion reactions, febrile non-hemolytic reactions, allergic reactions, septic reactions, circulatory overload
What is FFP?
all the clotting factors
should not be used as a plasma expander
What is FFP indicated for?
multiple factor deficiencies and is BLEEDING
thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura (TTP)
SE of FFP
headache, nausea, itching/hives, hemolytic transfusion reactions, febrile non-hemolytic reactions, allergic reactions, septic reactions, circulatory overload
What is PRBC?
made from whole blood (removing most of plasma)
one PRBC unit (300ml) will raise hct by 3%, hgb by 1g/dl
What are PRBCs indicated for?
replace RBCs when tissue oxygenation is impaired
hemoglobin <7 or <8 for cardiac pts
acute or chronic anemia
SE of PRBCs
hemolytic transfusion reactions, febrile non-hemolytic reactions, allergic reactions, septic reactions, circulatory overload
What is whole blood?
contains RBC, WBC, platelets, plasma
What is whole blood indicated for?
large volume hemorrhaging, autologous donations for elective surgery
SE of whole blood
hemolytic transfusion reactions, febrile non-hemolytic reactions, allergic reactions, septic reactions, circulatory overload
What are platelets?
derived from whole blood, stored at room temperature (CANNOT be frozen)
What are platelets indicated for?
platelet count <50,000 and bleeding
prior to surgical procedure
SE of platelets
hemolytic transfusion reactions, febrile non-hemolytic reactions, allergic reactions, septic reactions, circulatory overload
fluid of choice if 20% or less blood loss
crystalloids
fluid of choice if 20-50% blood loss
nonprotein colloids (dextran)
fluid of choice if 50% slow or 20% rapid blood loss
whole blood, PRBCs, and/or PPF and FFP
