Blood Supply Flashcards
(9 cards)
Which arteries make up the circle of Willis?
Posterior cerebral artery, posterior communicating artery, internal carotid, anterior communicating artery, and anterior cerebral artery
What is the border zone?
Distal territories of cerebral arteries that overlap at the periphery’s. This is where it watershed infarct occur.
What makes up the blood brain barrier?
Endothelial cells of brain capillaries, basal lamina, astrocyte end feet forming glia limitons, pericytes
What is the function of the blood brain barrier?
Prevent substances from entering the brain
What is a herniation syndrome?
Intracranial event, cause an increase in intracranial pressure and forces brain content over edge of dural reflection
Subfalcine or cingulate herniation
Chefs midline brain content shift below, falx cerebri
TransTentorial descending herniation.
Central herniation —> Diencephalon forces down increasing pressure on Brainstem
Uncal Herniation —> Uncus forced down increasing pressure on brainstem
TransTentorial Ascending Herniation
Upward Cerebellar Herniation —> Cerebellum shoved up causing increased pressure on Brainstem
Tonsillar Herniation
Increase Pressure on Medulla
