Blood Vessels Flashcards
(24 cards)
What are the three types of blood vessels?
Arteries, Veins and Capillaries
What is the typical blood flow?
Heart, Arteries, Arterioles, Capillaries, Venules, Veins, and Heart
How many Tunic Coats does the Blood Vessels have?
3
What does the Tunica Intima coat look like?
Innermost and thin. Endothelium (Simple Squamous E.T.) + C.T.
What does the Tunica Media look like?
Middle and thickest. Has smooth muscle fibers arranged circularly. Connective Tissue (elastic and collagen) example: Arteries
What does the Tunica Externa look like?
Fibrous Connective Tissue Sheath
What do arteries do?
Carry blood AWAY from the heart. It is the thickest wall Tunica Media. Arteries carry oxygenated blood
What do Pulmonary arteries do?
Carry O2 poor blood
What do Systemic Arteries do?`
Carry O2 Rich Blood
What are the 2 types of arteries?
Elastic and Muscular
What is the Elastic Muscle?
Largest in Aorta and Pulmonary trunk. Thickest (tunica) media with increased elastic tissue. Can stretch. Reduces pressure between systole and diastole
What is Muscular (Distribution)
Tunica Media: Smooth muscle fibers and can change diameter. Can increase blood flow and blood pressure. Contracts when injured
What are Arterioles?
smallest arteries. They deliver blood to Capillaries and regulate blood flow to Capillaries
What do veins do?
Carry blood to heart
What do veins look like?
Thin walled, wider luman, greater diamater. Tend to be more Superficial located under lower pressure.
What are venules?
smallest veins that receive blood from capillaries
Venous
assisted by wider lumen
What do Valves do?
They prevent backflow
What does a Muscular Compression do?
Skeletal muscle contractions and aids venous return
What consists of a respiratory pump?
Pressure drops in Thoracic Cavity during inhalation. Pulls blood into Vanae Cavae.
What are capillaries?
They are the thinnest walls (Tunica intima) Site of Exchange via Diffusion.
What are Precapillary Sphincters?
Smooth muscle in arterioles. They regulate blood flow into capillaries.
What does the Systemic Circuit do?
carries oxygenated blood to numerous organs
What functions do the special circuits (systemic) serve?
Hepatic Portal, Fetal, Coronary, and Cerebral
