Blood Vessels And Vascular Shunting Flashcards

(10 cards)

1
Q

Why is it when exercising muscles that are working need more blood?

A
  • Red blood cells containing O2 move there.
    Why?
  • A source of energy.

Q

What happens to the areas that need more blood?

A

The blood redistributes away from the inactive areas (digestive system) to active areas (working muscles), the blood pressure increases.

3
Q

When inactive what occurs?

A

Vasoconstriction occurs which is when blood vessels constrict to decrease blood flow and supply.

Q

When active when it occurs?

A

Vasodilation occurs when the blood vessels dilate (widen) to increase blood flow & supply. More blood = more O2.

Q

Describe how arteries, veins & capillaries carry blood.

A
  • They carry blood under pressure.
  • The pressure comes from your heart.
  • Very important not to be too low or too high.

Q

Describe the blood vessels, Capillaries. How are they important in sport?

A
  • They are the link between arteries & veins - move the blood between the 2.
  • Very small.
  • They are very important as allow gaseous exchange to occur. O2 in CO2 out.

Q

Describe the blood vessels, arteries. What is there importance in sport?

A
  • Carry the blood away from the heart (under pressure)high), oxygenated blood except pulmonary artery.
  • Thick muscular wall.
  • Lumen: cavity visible containing blood.
  • Small.
  • HR increases, muscles need more O2 —> energy.
  • Blood flow has to increase.
  • Walls of arteries contract and relax to help regulate blood pressure, lumen widens, increased blood flow and vascular shunt.

Q

Describe the blood vessels, veins? What is the importance in sport?

A
  • Carry blood towards the heart (under pressure)low) have valves to stop back flow.
  • Blood usually deoxygenated except the pulmonary veins!
  • Thinner walls.
  • Larger then an artery.
  • Lumen visible.
  • They ‘re-cycle’ blood bring deoxygenated blood back to heart —> lungs.
