Blood Vessles Flashcards
(12 cards)
Name the 3 blood vessels
Arteries
Arterioles
Veins
What do arteries do
Carry blood away from the heart at high pressure
3 structures of arteries
Thick and muscular walls
Narrow lumen
Elastic tissue
3 structure of arteries relating to its function
- thick and muscular walls to transport blood away from the heart under high pressure
- narrow lumen to maintain high pressure
- elastic tissue that stretches and recoils to maintain high blood pressure and smooth blood flow
What do arterioles do
Control blood flow to capillaries and regulates blood pressure
3 structures of arterioles
Thick layer of muscle
Less elastic tissue
Small lumen
3 stcrures of arterioles relating to its funtion
- thick layer of muscle for vasodilation and vasoconstriction
- less elastic tissue bcs of low blood pressure
- small lumen aiding pressure regulation
What do veins do
Returns blood to the heart at low pressure
2 structures of veins
Thin walls
Valves
2 structures of veins relating to its function
Thin walls bcs the blood is at low pressure and not involved in constriction
Valves to prevent backflow
3 structural properties of capillaries
One cell thick walls
Narrow lumen
Large surface area due to large number of them and branching
3 stcrural properties of cappilaries relating to its function
- one cell thick for a short diffusion distance for efficient gas/ nutrient exchange
- narrow lumen which forces rbc to squeeze thru single file to increase time for exchanger and increase surface area
- large surface area due to large number of them and branching which maximises exchange b/w blood and tissues
