16
Q
  1. Explain how muscles work as a pair to bend and straighten the arm at the elbow causing movement at the joint?
A

Flexion of a joint is a decrease in the joint angle from the body in anatomical position. When the elbow is bent the forearm is flexed which means that the flexor is contracted or has pulled the bone of the forearm. Most flexor takes place in a forward direction. The exception to this is the leg where flexion of the leg results in the bending of the knee. Extension of the joint is when the joint is returned to anatomical position or increased the angle of a joint, which means the extensor is contracted. An example of this is when the triceps brachi contracts to straighten the arm. The biceps brachi Muscle in the upper arm contracts to bend the elbow. Muscles work in pairs so that at the same time, the biceps brachi muscle contracts to bend the joint and the triceps brachi returns to original length. To straighten the arm or extend the joint, the triceps brachi contracts while the biceps returns to its original length.
