BLS & CPR Flashcards
an emergency procedure that consists of recognizing respiratory or cardiac
arrest or both and the proper application of CPR to maintain life until a
victim recovers or advanced life support is available
Basic Life Support
BLS- an emergency procedure that consists of ___________ and the_________ to maintain life until a
victim recovers or advanced life support is available
recognizing respiratory or cardiac
arrest or both
and proper application of CPR
Objectives of BLS (3)
To provide breathing when natural breathing has ceased.
• To provide artificial circulation when heart has stopped beating.
• To prevent deterioration of the brain and other vital organs by rescue
breathing and artificial circulation by external chest compression or
cardiac defibrillator
Air enters our body through our nose and mouth through
inspiration
- millions of cells in the lungs
- tiny sacs of cells that collect oxygen and mix them up with our blood
Alveoli
alveoli are sacs of cells that collect ____
oxygen
Carbon dioxide is given off through ___
expiration
the body does not _____ but needs a continuous fresh supplyfresh supply
does not store oxygen
mixture of gases
80% nitrogen and 20% oxygen
air that enters our body
20% oxygen and 4% carbon dioxide
air that we breath out
16% oxygen and small amount of carbon dioxide
Brain:
- Control all bodily function:
- Needs constant oxygen supply and nutrients
- Very sensitive, lead to cell death if oxygen from blood is lost ____ minutes of oxygen deprivation
3-4 minutes
- when breathing and circulation stops
clinical death
- brain has been deprived of oxygenated blood for a longer period of
time, - prognosis poor
biological death
0-4 minutes -
4-6 minutes -
6-10 minutes -
10 - more minutes -
0-4 minutes - brain damage not likely
4-6 minutes - brain damage is probable
6-10 minutes - irreversible brain damage is probable
10 - more minutes -irreversible brain damage is certain
DRSCAB-D
Danger, response, send for help, circulation, airway, breathing, defibrillate
There is a common acronym in BLS used to guide providers in the
appropriate steps to assess and treat patients in respiratory and cardiac
distress.
DRSCAB-D
An emergency procedure applied to a patient who is not breathing
and whose heart has stop beating.
Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation involves a combination of :
rescue breathing and external chest compressions
CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION
• May give as much as __of the normal circulation to the brain and
other structures if done correctly
25%
Application of rhythmic downward pressure over the lower half of the
sternum, slightly above the xiphoid process
• The pressure created on the chest and other chest organ pushes
blood to and from the heart, thus providing artificial circulation
towards vital organs including the brain.
External Chest Compression
External Chest Compression:
• Application of rhythmic downward pressure over the lower half of the
sternum, slightly above the ___
xiphoid process
