BN Definitions Flashcards
(22 cards)
The ability of a system, software or standard to share data, commands and applications with previous versions of the same product or standard.
Backward Compatible
The minimum (blank) you can bend a cable before damaging it and causing distortion of the electrical signal, resulting in Cross Talk or noise.
Bend Radius
A tool used to attach the RJ-45 Connector to the bulk Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) Ethernet cable.
Cable Crimper
A tool used to test whether an assembled cable will conduct electricity. With it, the sequence of flashing lights determines the cable type and functionality.
Cable Tester
A type of Ethernet twisted-pair cable. The different categories achieve different speed because of the number of twists in the wire.
Category 6 (CAT6)
Cable used for TV and Ethernet networks, consisting of an insulated tube that a central conductor runs through. Used in Thinnet, Thicknet and legacy networks.
Coaxial Cable (Coax)
Interference in a network, such as telephone, radio or Ethernet networks, that is caused by Electromagnetic Interference. This can occur when cables are run near electrical devices.
Cross Talk
A type of twisted-pair cabling used to connect one computer to another. It is used for direct file transfers. These cables can connect any similar devices, such as computer to computer, hub to hub, and etc.
Crossover Cables
The Electronic Industries Alliance (blank) and Telecommunications Industry Association (blank) standards for connecting UTP cable. (Blank) is considered the industry standard.
EIA/TIA 568-A and 568-B
The static noise that is produced by (blank) signals that can interfere with other (blank) signals and render them unintelligible. In Ethernet networks, placing cable beside other electrical devices can cause (blank). This leads to dropped packets, resulting in slower networks because lost data must be re-sent.
Electromagnetic Interference (EMI)
A Local Area Network (LAN) protocol that uses packet switching for communication. It is also the type of cable (Thinnet or twisted pair) used for LAN.
Ethernet
Cable containing strands of glass or plastic that transmits light rather than electrical signals. The strands are coated in Kevlar and plastic.
Fiber Optic Cable
It is 1 billion bits. It stands for (blank) per second, which is a speed by which to measure the transfer of data through Ethernet cables.
Gigabit and GBPS
A device used with twisted pair cabling to connect computers in an Ethernet local area network, enabling the computers to communicate with each other and connect to the internet.
Hub or Switch
The measure of overall opposition to the flow of an electrical current. It is determined by the resistance, inductive reactance and capacitive reactance in a given circuit.
Impedance
The connector used on the end of a bulk UTP Ethernet cable for connecting to the internet. It looks like an (blank)-11 (phone) connector but is larger.
RJ-45 Connector
It is 1 million bits. It stands for (blank), which is a speed by which to measure the transfer of data through Ethernet cables.
Megabit and MBPS
A type of twisted pair cabling used to connect computers on a local area network through a Hub or Switch, allowing users of those computers to connect to the internet or transfer files between the computers.
Straight-Through Cables
A colloquial term for thin-wire coaxial cable as opposed to (blank), the more expensive, thicker coaxial cable. It is short for thin-wire Ethernet.
Thinnet
A kind of topology used in networks strung together with coaxial or twisted pair cable. Computers are connected in a ring formation, and data is passed from computer to computer. The network has the physical topology of a star network. The network avoids having packets collide and conflict by granting “tokens” to one computer at a time, giving that computer permission to send information. When one computer finishes its turn, it passes the “token” to the next computer in the ring.
Token Ring
The arrangement in which the computers and devices of a network are connected to each other (e.g. token ring, bus, star or mesh).
Topology
A type of cable used for telephone wire or computer-to-computer communications. It is available in seven categories.
Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP)
