Body Planes, Directions, and Cavities Flashcards
(19 cards)
What is the coronal or frontal plane?
It is perpendicular to the ground and divides the body into dorsal (posterior) and ventral (anterior) portions.
What is the transverse plane?
A horizontal plane that divides the body into an upper (superior) section and a lower (inferior) section.
What are other names for the transverse plane?
- Transaxial planes * Axial planes
What is the sagittal plane?
A vertical plane that divides the body into a left section and a right section.
What is the midsagittal plane?
A specific sagittal plane that passes down the midline of the body, separating it into equal halves.
What does the median (midsagittal) plane do?
Divides the body into equal right and left halves.
What does the frontal (coronal) plane do?
Divides the body into front and back portions.
What does the transverse plane divide?
Divides the body into upper and lower portions.
What does medial mean?
Moving towards the midline of the body.
What does lateral mean?
Moving towards the side of the body.
What does anterior (ventral) refer to?
The front part of the body.
What does posterior (dorsal) refer to?
The back part of the body.
What does superior (cephalic) mean?
Towards the head.
What does inferior (caudal) mean?
Towards the feet.
Fill in the blank: The _______ plane is perpendicular to the ground and divides the body into dorsal and ventral portions.
[coronal or frontal]
Fill in the blank: The _______ plane divides the body into upper and lower sections.
[transverse]
True or False: The sagittal plane divides the body into equal right and left sections.
False
True or False: The midsagittal plane creates unequal left and right halves.
False
List the directional terms related to body positions.
