Body Structure, Color And Oncology Flashcards
Cell
Basic unit of all living things.
The human body is composed of trillions of cells, which vary in size and shape according to function
Cell membrane
Forms the boundary of the cell
Cytoplasm
Gel- like fluid inside the cell
Nucleus
Largest structure within the cell, usually spherical and centrally located
Contains chromosomes for cellular reproduction and the control center of the cell
Genes
Regions within chromosomes
Each chromosomes contains several thousands of genes that determine hereditary characteristics
Chromosomes
Located in the nucleus of the cell
Each normal human cell has 46 chromosomes, except mature sex cell - 23 chromosomes
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid
Comprises each gene
A chemical that regulates the activities of the cell
Tissue
Group of similar cells that performs a specific task
Musscle tissue
Composed of cells that have a special ability of contract, usually producing movement
Nervous tissue
Found in nerves, spinal cord and brain
Responsible for coordinating and controlling body activities
Connective tissue
Connects, supports, penetrates and encases body structures
Adipose (fat) and Osseous (bone) tissues and blood are types of connective tissue
Epithalial tissue
Major covering of external surface of body
Forms membranes that line body cavities and organs
Major tissue in glands
Organ
Two or more kinds together to perform special body functions
System
Group of organs that work together to perform complex body functions
