Body Systems Flashcards
(39 cards)
Tissues
Classifications of cells that are alike.
Epithelial tissue
Tissue that covers the body, and envelops the things inside the body.
Nerve tissue
Tissue that transmits signals between the brain and other parts of the body.
Muscle tissue
Tissue that controls the motion of body parts.
Organs
Particular structures in the body that have distinct niches. They are made up of at least two tissues.
Organ systems
Sets of organs that cooperate to execute tasks which allow the body to survive.
Digestive system
The organ system that breaks down food,
absorbs nutrients, and disposes of solid waste.
Circulatory system
The organ system that relocates blood, oxygen, as well as liquid and solid wastes around the body.
Nervous system
The organ system that operates and manages body functions. It senses and reacts to inner and outer adjustments.
Respiratory system
The organ system that manages breathing, as well as the exchange of gases (O2 and CO2) within lungs and tissues. O2 in, CO2 out in animals.
Skeletal system
The organ system that stabilizes the body, shields some internal organs, and cooperates with muscles to manage the motion of body parts. There are 206 bones in the body.
Muscular system
The organ system that allows organs to contract and relax. It cooperates with the skeletal system to control the motion of body parts.
What is the heart?
The heart is a strong muscle which pumps blood throughout the body. It is an involuntary muscle.
Where is the heart located?
Between the lungs and behind the rib cage.
What are the four chambers of the heart?
The right atrium, left atrium, right ventricle, and left ventricle.
How many pumps is the heart made of?
The heart is made of two pumps.
What is the pericardium?
A protective covering which keeps the heart from rubbing against the lungs and chest wall.
What is the septum?
The muscular wall which divides the two sides of the heart.
What are the lower chambers of the heart called?
Ventricles.
On average, how many times does an adult heart beat a minute?
70
What are the upper chambers of the heart called?
Atria.
The right side of the heart pumps blood to what?
The lungs.
The left side of the heart pumps blood to what?
The body.
What do valves do?
They control the flow of blood through the heart.
