Body Systems - Vascular Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
function(s)?
A
- blood vessels circulate essential materials around the body (nutrients, hormones, antibodies, respiratory gases, waste products)
- regulates blood pressure and body temperatures
2
Q
parts?
A
- heart
- vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries)
3
Q
compare the three types of vessels (function, pressure, diameter, vessel wall, elastic fibres, valves)
A
- artery: sends blood from the heart; high pressure; narrow lumen; thick wall (3 layers); large amounts; no valves
- vein: sends blood to the heart; low pressure; wide lumen; thin wall (3 layers); small amounts; has valves
- capillaries: material exchange w/the tissues; vv low pressure; extremely narrow lumen; vv thin wall (1 layer); none; no valves
4
Q
explain the structural characteristics of the three vessels and how they relate to their respective functions
A
- artery: thick walls, narrow lumen -> transport blood at high pressure
- veins: thin walls, wide lumen -> transport blood at low pressure
- capillaries: walls that are a single cell thick -> exchange material between blood and tissue
