Body Waves Flashcards
(7 cards)
P-waves
Compressionsl body waves, fastest seismic waves, smallest aplitutude, P as in primary, can move through ALL substances
S-waves
Shear body waves, second fastest seismic wave, S as in secondary, CANNOT pass through liquid
Surface waves
Travel along the Warths surface, large amplitude seismic wave
Seismometer
Measure the movement of Earths surface due to seismic waves
Magnitude
Measure of the amplitude, richter scale (ML), moment scale (Mw), seismic movement (Mo)
Mercalli Intensity scale
Varies from distance from epicenter, subjective, function of distance, ground structures are built in.
Seismic waves
The energy released during the esrthquake that travels away from the source in the form of waves
