consolation of philosophy

A

prior to being executed, boethius wrote the consolation of philosophy
-he imagines a dialogue between himself the prioner and a femalepersonification of philosophy (lady phiosophy)
-his shift into bad fortune had boethiu confused, lady philosophy told him he has no reason to grieve because true happiness is not damaged by any disaster
falso goods: wealth and power etc. are just byways and are not the real goal.

  • lady philosophy says that mortal and fellting humans cannotendow happiness, however boethius has no reason to complain because true happinnes cannot be damaged by tradgedy
  • everything that happens does so as a reult of gods providence
