Bohr Shift Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
What happens if the partial pressure of oxygen is low
A
Oxygen dissociates from oxyhaemoglobin
2
Q
What happens when partial pressure of co2 is high
A
Haemoglobin has a lower affinity for oxygen so is less efficient at loading but more efficient at unloading
3
Q
What is Bohr shift
A
The shift to the right of on oxygen dissociation curve due to the presence of co2
4
Q
Why does haemoglobin have a lower affinity for oxygen at higher partial pressures of co2
A
Co2 reacts with water to form carbonic acid which dissociates into hydrogen carbonate and hydrogen ions the hydrogen ions lower ph so haemoglobin release oxygen to balance it out
