Bologna CH111 Adnexal Neoplasms Flashcards
(17 cards)
Hair follicle naevi are hamartomas in which hairs and follicles that ensheath them have abnormal morphology or size or are present in increased numbers
T
Hamartomas are benign proliferation’s composed of cellular elements native to a site, in aberrant proportion
T
Accessory tragus overlaps with hair follicle naevus (two entities may be the same)
T
Child grows proportionally with hair follicle naevus
F , child grows disproportionally faster than the lesion
Trichofolliculoma presents as a papule or nodule involving the face, scalp or upper trunk
T
How does Pilar sheath acanthoma differ from trichofolliculoma?
Pilar sheath acanthoma similarly has a central infundibulum with follicle structures radiating from the centre, however they do not recapitulate the full hair follicle - only follicular isthmus and outer sheath (unlike trichofolliculoma)_
Disorders with angiofibromas
TS
Birt-Hogg-Dube
MEN1
Fibrofolliculoma displays slender strands of follicular mantle cells emanating from a folliculosebaceous unit at the level of the isthmus
T
Naevus sebaceous - list secondary neoplasms
TTDSAP Trichoblastoma (most common) Trichilemmoma Desmoplastic trichoepithelioma Sebaceous adenoma Apocrine adenoma Poroma
- malignancy probably develops only in longstanding or neglected lesions but exceptionally can be a source of mortality
Pathology of chondroid syringoma
- prominent collagen component to stroma, but myxoid and lipocytic zones can also be found
—> large inter-anastomosing and branching tubules lined by two cell layers - columnar cells with decapitation secretion at the luminal border and cuboidal cells peripherally (this configuration has been dubbed apocrine mixed tumour)
Disorders with pilomatricoma
Rubenstein turns wool in my garden
- Rubenstein syndrome
- Turner Syndrome
- edWard syndrome
- Myotonic dystrophy
- Gardner’s syndrome
Retention of PTEN expression with trichilemmoma , assessed with IHC, is suggestive of Cowden syndrome
F, loss of PTEN expression
There is increased incidence of syringomas in Asian population
T
Poromas can occur following chemotherapy or radiation therapy
T
Palms and soles demonstrating sessile vascular plaques with a thin indented moat is suggestive of which tumour
Poromas
Microcystic adnexal carcinoma typically presents in the elderly
F, in young or middle aged adults
MAC presents more commonly in males
F , in women and occasionally children
