Boltzmann Distribution Curves Flashcards
(9 cards)
What does the curve starting at (0,0) mean?
There are no molecules with zero energy
What is on the y axis?
Number of molecules with energy
What is on the x axis?
Energy
Does the curve touch the x axis at high energies and what does this tell us?
no- there is no maximum energy that molecules could have
What does the area under the curve tell us?
The total number of molecules in the system
Where is the most probable energy?
Directly under the peak of the curve
Where is the mean energy?
Just to the right of the most probable energy
Where would the catalyst activation energy be in regard to the normal activation energy?
To the left of the activation enery
What are the 2 effects to increasing the temperature?
The molecules are moving faster so the frequency of all collisions increase
At higher temperatures, the number of molecules with at least the activation energy has increased substantially
