bonding Flashcards
(13 cards)
what is covalent bonding
formed when a pair of electrons is shared between two non metals
what is ionic bonding
strong electrostatic. force of attraction between these oppositely charged ions (give one to another )
what’s giant covalent bonding
A giant covalent structure is where a large number of atoms are joined by covalent bonds
what is metallic bonding
Metallic bonding is the electrostatic attraction between positive metal ions and delocalised electrons
what is covalent bonds between
only non metals
what is covalent bonds between
only non metals
what does group number tell you
the number of electons on the outer shell
What are Properties of a covalent bond
. Low boiling points (because of weak intermolecular forces)
Giant covalent : diamonds
do they conduct electricity ?
No
Poor conductors as no free electrons
Giant covalent : diamonds
What is there melting point ?
Very high
Strong covalent binds need broken
Giant covalent : graphite
Do they conduct electricity?
Yes
Because they have delocalised electrons (they can move around )
Giant covalent : graphite
What are there melting point
High
Strong covalent bonds
Properties of simple covalent compounds
Low melting and boiling points and don’t conduct electricity
Weak intermolecular forces
