Bonding Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is an ion?
at atom with a charge. A different number of protons and electrons.
what group has a high electronegativity and high ionization energy?
Nonmetals
Which group has LOW electronegativity?
Metals
What is an ionic compound?
Consists of a metal and a nonmetal. electrically neutral.
What is the acronym for oxidation (redox) process
OILRIG
oxidation is losing, reduction is gaining.
what is an ionic bond?
the strong electrostatic force that holds ions together in a compound (between positive and negative charges)
What is a covalent bond?
the bond between two nonmetals
What are the properties of an ionic compound?
solid at room temp
high melting point
conduct electricity when liquid or aqueous
what is an alloy?
a homogenous mixture of metals. (brass and steel)
what is the relation between bond strength and melting point?
directly proportional. the stronger the bond, the higher the melting point.
what are the three types of bonds?
ionic, covalent, metallic
what is a metallic bond?
positive metal ion, w free floating valence electrons
