Q

Why do ionic compounds conduct electricity when molten

A

The ions are free to move so can carry a charge and electrical charge

Q

Why can ionic compounds dissolve in water

A
  • Water molecule is polar so part of it is slight positive and slightly negative
-Water molecules are attracted to the charged ions
  • They pull the ions away and cause it to dissolve

Q

Why do simple covalent compounds have low melting and boiling points

A

The intermolecular forces between the molecules only need to be overcome, which doesn’t require a lot of energy due to them being weak. You don’t need to break the covalent bonds within the molecules.
