Ionic compounds are always formed from …..
Metal and a non metal
What overall are metal ions charge ?

What is the general non metal ion charge
Negative

explain dot and cross diagrams
Sorry no pictures ?? go look it up in your book you whorreee
What is ionic bonding?
A strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
Characteristics of ionic compounds ?
- high boiling point and melting point as strong electrostatic forces
- conductive in solutions
What is covalent bonding ?
A shared pair of electrons between two non metal atoms . They achieve a full outer shell by sharing the electrons. They are attracted to the others nuclei
Set definition of covalent bonding
A strong attraction between the bonding pair of electrons and the nuclei involved in the atoms of the bond
Dot and cross diagrams in covalent bonds
Look it up biatch i aint your dictionary
What are the two categories that substances with covalent bonds fall into ?
1) giant covalent
2) simple molecules
Why do substances with simple molecular structures have low melting points ?
Strong covalent bonds however weak intermolecular forces
Why dont simple molecular structures conduct ?
No free flowing electrons or ions
What are giant covalent lattices ?
Structures in which all atoms are connected by covalent bonds
Examples of giant covalent lattices
- diamonds
- graphite
Characteristics of giant covalent lattices
- very high boiling points
- sometimes conduct … Graphite
What is the structure of a metal
A giant structure of positive ions surrounded by a sea of delocalised electrons
Characteristics of metals ?
Conductive due to delocalised electrons
Layers of ions can slide so they are malleable and ductile
Butttt strong bonds mean they dont melt easily
