Q

What is ionic bonding?

A

Ionic bonding is the strong electrostatic attraction between positive and negative ions.
eg: Na+ and Cl- forming NaCl

Q

Describe the melting/boiling points of ionic compounds

A

Ionic bonding involves strong electrostatic forces. This causes a high melting/ boiling point in ionic compounds

Q

How are melting/boiling points determined?

A

To melt or boil the structure, the forces holding the structure together have to be overcome. Therefore a lot of thermal of energy is required if the bond is strong.

6
Q

Describe conductivity in a structure

A

For a structure to be conductive of heat or electricity, there should be charged particles within the structure (electrons or ions) that can move to carry the charge along

Q

Do ionic compounds conduct heat or electricity as solids?

A

No mobile ions or electrons can be found in this structure => not conductive in the solid state
