Bonding, Naming And Formulating - Quizam Flashcards
Ionic Bond
-Metal + non-metal
-Metals become cations
-Non - metals become cations
-Oppositely charged ions attract and bond
-Metals hold on loosely while non-metals like grabbing electrons
Covalent Bonds
-When two non-metals try to “steal” electrons from eachother
-Atoms “share” the same electrons
-Neither atom “let go” of their electrons, so they band together
-Have a full valence shells
Metallic Bonds
-The loosely held electrons break free and are attracted by many nuclei
-Nuclei are held together by a “sea” of electrons -those of which attract many electrons
-Electrons are constantly changing the.atoms they interact with
Ionic characteristics
-Become rigid
-Have high melting points
-Conduct electricity when dissolved in water
Molecular Characteristics
Lower melting points
As solid, not rigid
Can’t Conduct electricity (molecules neutral, charges trapped in the bonds)
Metallic Characteristics
-Will conduct electricity- electrons can flow freely
-have high melting points
-can be bent or dented (nuclei not fixed - they can move freely)
