Bonding & Structure Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is a Covalent Bond
The electrostatic attraction between a shared pair of electrons and the nuclei of bonded atoms
What is a Co-ordinate Bond
A shared pair of electrons between two atoms where one atoms provides both electrons
What is the Octet Rule
When reacting, and atoms tends to gain, lose or share electrons to achieve 8 in its outer shell
What is Electronegativity
The extent to which an atom attracts the binding electrons in a covalent bond
What is a Polar Bond
A covalent bond in which there is unequal sharing of the bonding electrons
What is Delocalised Electrons
Outer electrons that do not have a fixed position and move freely
What is van der Waals’ forces
The attraction between instantaneous and induced dipoles on neighbouring molecules
What is Permanent dipole-dipole forces
Attraction between the positive ends of the permanent dipole on a molecule with the negative end of the permanent dipole of a neighbouring molecule
What is a Hydrogen Bond
The attraction between a lone pair of electrons in a very electronegative atom (N,O,F) one molecule and a hydrogen atom in a neighbouring molecule, in which the hydrogen is covalently bonded to a very electronegative atom
