Bonding, Structure, And Properties Of Matter Flashcards
(6 cards)
Explain Magnesium and Oxygen reacting to each other (5 points)
-transfer of electrons from Magnesium to Oxygen
-magnesium loses 2 electrons, oxygen gains 2 electrons
-the ratio is 1 magnesium to 1 oxygen
-magnesium is a positively charged ion and oxygen is a negatively charged ion
What is a positively charged ion?
Cation
What is a negatively charged ion called?
Anions
What kind of structure do ionic compounds have?
Giant ionic lattice structure
What forces are in ionic compounds between oppositely charged ions?
Electrostatic forces of attraction
What are 2 properties of Ionic compounds?
1- can’t conduct electricity when solid
When melts, ions are free to move, carry electric charge
When dissolved in water, ions separate, free to move, electric charge
2- high boiling and melting points, many strong bonds between ions, need lots of energy to overcome forces of attraction
