Bone Flashcards
(32 cards)
Osteoclasts
Eat away at bone
Articular surface
The surface of bone where two bones meet to form joints
Nutrient foramina
A channel that allows things to pass through.
Looks like a hole and/or hairline fracture
Endochondral bone formation
Bone replaces cartilage
Diaphysis
Shaft of bone
Epiphysis
On the distal and proximal end of long bone
Epiphyseal plate
Located between the epiphysis and diaphysis
Keel
Bony ridge of the sternum of a bird that muscle is attached to
What does the pectoral girdle consist of (3 bones)
Coracoids
Scapulas
Clavicles
What are the 5 functions of bone?
Support Protect Leverage Storage( calcium and blood) Blood cell formation
What are the 2 types of bone?
Cancellous
Compact
What is cancellous bone?
Light and spongy
What is compact bone?
Sense and heavy
What are the parts of a typical long bone
Articular cartilage Cancellous bone Epiphyseal plate Marrow cavity Periosteum Compact bone Endosteum
What is endosteum
Membrane that lines the hallow interior surfaces of bone
What are periosteum
Covers the outside of bone except on the articular surface
Osteocyte
Bone cell
Haversian canal
- runs vertically
- contains blood vessels and nerves to supply and nourish osteocytes
Osteon
- units of bone
The cylinder thing the Haversian canal sits in
Lamellae
The stuff that makes up the cylinder
Volksmann canal
- channels through bone matrix
- horizontal
- blood vessels in vc join with blood vessels in hc to get blood in bones
Lacuna
Small cavity in matrix where cells are contained
How does a fracture heal?
Osteoblasts activate to make bone around fracture. It’ll look like a callus. Osteoclasts eat down callus until bone is smoothie again
What makes more bone
Osteblast
