Bone disease OP and others Flashcards
(10 cards)
3 main focus of exercise in OP
- Static and dynamic balance exercise + fall prevention education
- High impact loaded strength exercise
- Cardiovascular Combine with loading like stepper would be best as compared to biking or swimming + flexibilty like Yoga or Tai chi
C/I or precautions in terms of activities or exercise with OP
- Avoid loaded flexion and rotation of spine as it can cause wedge #
Exercise focus? Flexion or extension based?
Patients in OP have flexed posture hence, we promote extension based exercises
Osteomalacia
Lack of mineralization of bone rather than cortical thinning and loss of bone density.
Presents with diffuse joint pain throughout the body, soft deformed bones and proximal muscle weakness and neuropathy
What will you see in almost all the patients or kids with bone d/o posture wise?
Bowing of legs due to weak bones
T spine kyphosis
Waddling gait
Paget’s malformation
It’s inadequate attempt of bone healing caused by disorganized bone remodeling leading to further #
Multiple #, T kyphosis headache, tinnitus, co ordination probelm
Osteogenesis imperfecta
Lack of type 1 collagen resulting in brittle bone. Autosomal dominant.
Kyphotic spine, triangular head, short stature and ligament laxity
Focus on handling and education to avoid PROM and excessive stretching
Osteopetrosis
Lack of carbonic anhydrase resulting in loss of osteoclast activity. Despite of no bone resorption and lots of bone it is usually weak and fragile.
Main complication of any # due to trauma like direct extension
- Osteomyelitis especially if immunocompromised individuals.
Prioritize Rx of Osteomyelitis
Education on infection prevention plus taking aseptic precautions.
Skin care would always be at the forefront
