bone, skin and soft tissue infections Flashcards
(31 cards)
what is osteomyelitis?
inflammation of the bone marrow and surrounding bone associated with infection
osteomyelitis commonly caused by
staphylococcus aureus
duration of disease have 2 which is
acute and chronic
symptom less than 1 week
acute
symptom greater than 1 month or relapse
chronic
risk factor of hematogenous spread
bacteremia (IV catheters, IVDU, URTI)
sickle cell anemia
gold standard diagnosis
bone biopsy/ aspiration
sign and symptoms
fever
pain and tenderness in affected area
generalized malaise
difficulty moving joints near the affected area
treatment for chronic osteomyelitis
antimicrobial therapy and surgical intervention
monitoring parameter osteomyelitis
adverse drug reaction
potential drug-drug interaction
adherence to outpatient therapy (oral antibiotics )
sign of inflammation, swelling, pain
ssti is
skin and soft tissue infection
ssti result from a
compromises of the skin’s defenses and microbial invasion
risk factor ssti
asplenia
older age
obesity
water exposure
human / animal bites
lymphedema
peripheral neuropathy
general sign and symptom ssti
erythema
swelling
pain
tender on palpitation
fever
folliculitis is ..
inflammation of the hair follicles
impetigo is ….
superficial skin infection that is seen most commonly in children
cellulitis is…
spreading infection of the skin extending to the deeper tissues involving subcutaneous tissue
symptom of cellulitis
fever
chills
malaise
complain that the affected area feels hot and painful
hypotension
dehydration
altered mental status are common
signs of cellulitis
erythema and edema of the skin
affected area generally warm to touch
lesion are non elevated and poorly defined margins
tender lymphadenopathy associated with lymphatic involvement is common
mild cellulitis typically localized to a
small area of the skin, no fever, no significant pain
moderate cellulitis typically required aggressive treatment such as
intravenous antibiotics
involves larger area of skin and deeper tissue involvement with more pronounced inflammation and systemic symptom
moderate cellulitis
common organisms for mild, moderate, severe cellulitis
staphylococcus aureus
streptococcous pyogenes
preferred treatment for mild cellulitis
cephalexin 1-2gm IV q6h
