Bones Flashcards
(27 cards)
Name and describe the 5 types of bones
- Long bones - longer than wide, contain bone marrow
- Short bones- cube-like in shape with similar width/length
- Flat bones- thin and broad in shape, found where extra protection is needed
- Irregular bones- complex shapes
- Sesamoid bones- small, flat, found in beds of tendons
Examples of the 5 bone types
Long bones- humerus Short bones- wrist bone Flat bones- sternum Irregular bones- vertebra Sesamoid bones- patella
Axial skeleton
the vertical central axis of the body with 80 bones
bones of axial skeleton
skull, facial bones, neck, chest, back
appendicular skeleton
forms upper and lower limbs as well as the pectoral (shoulder) girdle and pelvic girdle. 126 bones
bones of appendicular skeleton
arms, legs, hips, shoulders
List the 5 functions of bones
- Protect organs and tissues.
- Rigid framework.
- Levers of movement via tendons and muscles.
- Store and release important minerals.
- Blood cell production, regeneration, and maintenance.
Epiphysis
Ends of bone.
Diaphysis
shaft of bone
articular cartilage
covers the ends of long bones to reduce friction
spongy bone
porous bone that contains red marrow
periosteum
covers the outside of bone. contains blood vessels and nerves that nourish the compact bone.
compact bone
hard walls of the diaphysis
yellow marrow
fat storage
medullary cavity
filled w/ yellow marrow
epiphyseal line/discs/plate
where growth occurs
red marrow
production of blood cells
endosteum
covers the inside of the medullary cavity, where bone growth/repair/remodeling occur
list the bones of the skull
cranium -> frontal, occipital (lower back), parietal (upper back), temporal
facial bones
maxilla, mandible, zygomatic (cheekbones)
spinal bones
cervical (atlas, axis) (7), thoracic (12), lumbar (5), sacrum (5), coccyx (4)
