Bones & Bone Tissue Flashcards
(40 cards)
5 General Functions of Bone
- support body
- protects internal organs
- facilitate movement
- produce blood cells
- stores/ release minerals and fat
Long Bone
Longer than wide
- act as levers for movement
- located in the arms, legs
- – as long they’re long
Short Bone
Cube-liked and provide stability and support
- one behind the wrist
Flat Bones
thing plates that protect internal organs
- located in the chest area
Irregular Bone
varied shapes and protect internal organs
Sesamoid Bones
Seed-shaped and protect tendons
- located in the kneecap
Perforating Canals
carry blood vessels and nerve horizontally
Osteon
structural unit of compact bone
Central Canal
carries blood and nerves vertially
Concentric Lamellae
circular rings of bone around the central canal
Lacuna
spaces for osteocytes
Canaliculi
small canals that link lacunae together
Diaphysis
tubular shaft region that act as a lever for body movement
- Periochondrium surrounds cartilage model
- Chondrocytes grow in size
Epiphysis
end region that contains spongy bone and red marrow
- Chondrocytes dies and leave open spaces
Medullary Cavity
hollow region inside diaphysis that contains yellow marrow
Epiphyseal Line
ossified remnant of the epiphyseal plate
Periosteum
fibrous, outer membrane covering for tendons & ligaments
Endosteum
delicate membrane lining the medullary cavity
Articular Cartilage
a layer of hyaline cartilage that reduces friction between absorb shock
Zone of Reserve
secure cartilage to epiphysis; no cell division
Zone of Proliferation
where cells divide and oranize into columns
Zone of Maturation and Hypertophy
where cells grow in size
Zone of Calcification
cartilage calcifies and chondrocytes die
Zone of Ossification
cartilage is replaced with bone
